Amazon.com Review While some business schools show little interest in the AWA (analytical writing assessment) portion of your GMAT, other schools use the results to help distinguish between the hundreds of students competing for placement in their programs. If your schools of choice consider AWA results when selecting students, you'll need to devote time to your essays as well as to your math and verbal skills. When you take your GMAT, the computer randomly selects two essay questions from its question bank. GMAT CAT: Answers to the Real Essay Questions can help you prepare for all of them. No book is allowed to publish the questions (though this book's appendix will tell you how to download the 180 official AWA questions from the EST's web site)-- but this book does provide you with sample answers to all 180 questions. The authors warn you not to try to use their answers on the exam, as the GMAT readers feel pretty strongly about plagiarism--instead, they provide you with tools to help you compose your own high-scoring GMAT essays and a "scorecard" to help you score your practice essays. The book also offers advice on how to answer both the "analysis of an issue" and "analysis of an argument" questions, and truly practical information about the basic structure of the exam and even the word-processing program you'll be using on your test. Filled with such useful advice, GMAT CAT: Answers to the Real Essay Questions would be a great addition to the serious student's GMAT preparation. --C.B. Delaney

Excellent Essay Prep May 18, 2005 K. Furr 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I highly recommend this book if you want to maximize your GMAT AWA score. (And yes, AWA is not as important as the Q & V sections, but do you want people to think you're a lucky-guessing illiterate test monkey?)
This book helped me bag a perfect "6.0" on my GMAT essays recently. BUT NOTE: it *is* sufficient to buy a used copy of an older edition -- you don't need the newest one. I used the 1st edition from around 1998, that was fine.
You DO NOT need to read the book cover to cover. But do read at least 25 or 30 of the essays and pay attention. That will be excellent prep in showing you what a good essay is in terms of organization, length, rhetoric, etc. Well worth a few bucks and a few hours of prep time.
Very good March 12, 2007 F. Delgado (Novi, MI) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
By reading this book you can really understand exactly what the examinators (including computer examinator) are expecting and looking for in a GMAT essay.
You must have your own writing skills, but this book can definitely help with the format and key-phrases.
Very helpful !!! December 17, 1998 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a excellent book. I would recommend this book for anyone who is not a native english speaker.
Good Resource if the school you are applying to cares about the essays! April 6, 2008 Chrissie Padilla (Orange County, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The truth of the matter is some Grad Schools do not care what score you receive on the essay section of GMAT BUT some do! If the school of your dreams has an essay score requirement I recommend this book. If you actively read through 1/3 to 1/2 of each section(analysis of an issue, analysis of an argument) you will have a great understanding of what it takes to get a 5.0-6.0 on each essay. I read 50% of each section, took notes on transitions, introductory phrases, conclusion phrases, and memorized the recommended formats. This exercise took me about six hours, and was well worth it! It gave me an idea of the key topics GMAT tests on and what level of vocabulary I had to use to get a 6.0, and on test day I implemented their suggestions and got a 6.0! The last thing you want to do is prepare for the essay section, after long hours of Math/Verbal prep, but if you put six hours aside to work through this book, the weekend before your test it will be well worth it!Getting the GMAT score of your dreams is possible you just need time and right study guides.
The templates and reusable phrases are very useful. March 8, 2004 Burak Powers (Houston, TX USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is meant for those who worry about their low Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) or who want to get a perfect score (6/6). It is best book of its kind; includes about 100 samples and analyses for each the Issue and the Argument essays.
